Marko Jusup

Specially Appointed Assistant Professor

Mathematical Biology

Biography

I'm currently an assistant professor at Institute for Innovative Research, Tokyo Institute of Technology, Japan. Previously, I held a similar position for two years at Center of Mathematics for Social Creativity, Hokkaido University. I was also a Japan Society for the Promotion of Science (JSPS) postdoctoral fellow at Faculty of Sciences, Kyushu University. I got my (i) PhD in Environmental Risk Management in March 2012 from Yokohama National University, (ii) an MBA degree in Finance and Banking from Zagreb School of Economics and Management (ZSEM) in July 2008, as well as (iii) a BS degree in Physics and Mathematics from The University of Rijeka in Nov 2003. My research career started in Feb 2004 at Rudjer Boskovic Institute (RBI), the largest Croatian national research institution. Over time, I contributed to multiple international scientific projects, including large Pan-European collaborations within the Framework Programmes for Research and Technological Development. I actively support the creation of Free Content (e.g. Open Access, Open-source Software, etc.) and other projects improving human liberties.

Expectations for WRHI

By conducting research at WRHI, I expect to:
• generate more research impact,
• attain higher research quality,
• address more relevant scientific questions,
• respond to societal needs with research, and
• increase visibility of research.

Research Projects

  • Incentivizing the evolution of cooperation across continents and cultures

The need for cooperation in ancestral environments was local, within communities, villages, or
towns. This need has been superseded by the nationwide need for cooperation in not-so-distant history. Nowadays, however, modern socioeconomic trends, e.g., free trade, free movement of labor, and emerging information technologies, demand cooperation on the largest of scales—the global scale. It is unclear whether evolution has primed mankind for such large-scale cooperativeness. Our focus is on the conflict between selfishness and altruism, and how this to people's geographic or cultural origin.
    Period: until March, 2023 (planned)
Members: Petter Holme (Tokyo Tech), Zhen Wang (China), and numerous domestic and foreign research collaborators.
