Combining informatics and neuroscience to open up new fields in AI research
The Information and Artificial Intelligence International Research Hub Group aims to observe and analyze system dynamics. We use mathematical models to interpret big data, medical imaging data, and biological signals such as brainwaves in order to understand how these systems function, leading to the innovation of new technologies. Such new technologies will be used to establish systems that are able to make accurate predictions in the studied systems. As an example, we are involved in the development of an interface that will be able to communicate naturally with humans.
We harness the largely unrealized power of big data in various projects, including the estimation of fluctuations in the financial system using physical models and network theory, the identification of early signs of diseases from CT and MRI medical imaging data using machine learning techniques, the development of a computational neuroscientific approach to understand how the brain controls the body, as well as the description of a functional musculoskeletal model of the human body to build new brain-machine interfaces.
These projects will be advanced through the establishment of collaborations with international institutions that will create new fields of research combining information science and brain science as a foundation for artificial intelligence.
HIGHLIGHT
-
Network Science and Computational Social Science
We produce an enormous amount of data. This data can be used to help us understand the society in different ways from how social scientists traditionally have been doing. Our research takes data sets about human interaction and mobility as a starting point.
-
International Collaborative Research Project on Statistical Physics Modeling of Socio-Economic Phenomena
We are focusing on modelling socio-economic phenomena through the analysis of huge amounts of precise data. Such Big Data analyses allows us to construct mathematical models using statistical physics. Using this quantitative approach, we aim in the prediction and regulation of social phenomena. The main subjects of our research are financial markets, business firm trading networks, words in cyber-space and human flow patterns using GPS.
