Ceramics
Biography
Jürgen Rödel received a diploma in Materials Science from University of Erlangen-Nürnberg in 1983 and a Ph.D. from UC Berkeley in 1988 as well as a habilitation in Materials Engineering from Technische Universität Hamburg-Harburg (TUHH) in 1992. He held postdoc positions at National Institute of Standards and Technology and at TUHH. Since 1994 he works as professor at TU Darmstadt. He is also an honorary professor at USTB and currently a distinguished visiting professor at Tsinghua University (both Beijing) as well as specially appointed professor at Tokyo Institute of Technology, Japan. Rödel is the author or coauthor of 300 refereed publications with h-factor of 58.
Over the years his research covered sintering, mechanical properties, electrical reliability, lead-free piezoceramics and dislocation-tuned functionality. In Germany he received the highest awards by the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft for young (Heintz-Maier-Leibnitz prize) and for senior (Leibniz- Prize) scientists and is member of the National Academy of Science and Technology. He also received the IEEE ferroelectrics recognition award and the Amer. Ceram. Soc. Sosman award.
Expectations for WRHI
a) Japan is world leader in technical ceramics; therefore there is clear benefit in having contacts to Japanese institutes and companies.
b) TIT offers creative research groups for fruitful collaborations with complementary expertise
c) especially the Azuma group is world-renowned for synthesizing novel functional ceramic compounds
Research Projects

Properties of novel ferroelectric and antiferroelectric ceramics
During joint discussion new (anti-)ferroelectric ceramic materials are considered and synthesized in the Azuma group and then the mechanical, dielectric, ferroelectric and piezoelectric properties are being evaluated at TU Darmstadt. Atomic and electronic characterization is considered in collaboration through diffraction, imaging and spectroscopic techniques.
Periods: 7/2017-6/2020
Funding source: antiferroelectrics: state funded project on lead-free antiferroelectrics energy storage materials.
Ferroelectrics: DFG funding on new lead-free piezoceramics.
