Biography

Summary in 2018

In 2018, we made great progress in each of our research projects and expanded the breadth of our research through both internal and external collaborations. We have also increased in size, welcoming a fantastic Research Fellow, Sr. Data Analyst, Data Scientist and Machine Learning Engineer to the lab.

Over the course of 2017, our efforts were focused on building a foundation for a lab capable of advanced pathology digital imaging to pursue multi-disciplinary research projects with potential clinical applicability. Due to the hard work of my team and collaborators, 2018 proved to be a successful year of research for our lab. This year, we have established a protocol for each project with consideration of their connectivity. This allowed us to identify where and how to implement deep learning and AI in a way that is useful to treatment and diagnosis. The three major tasks of our lab are (1) basic technology development, (2) multimodality advanced imaging, and (3) advanced Whole Slide Imaging (WSI) such as confocal imaging and histology 3D imaging.

As WSI continues to grow in popularity, so does the need for a reliable mechanism for quality assurance and standardization. We are working to develop the next generation of slide/image quality evaluation and color standardization between scanners. We are also working to develop a standard protocol to evaluate the outcome of image and AI analysis, by partnering with an International organizations.

Micro-CT

Multimodality imaging uses several modalities such as CT, MRI, WSI and molecular test to analyze the variation of cell or organ due to disease by engineering technologies and clarify its relationship.

Micro-CT in medicine is a new modality and we strongly believe that it will play a very important role in the future of patient care. It is the pipeline which connects in-vivo imaging and ex-vivo imaging.

Since 2018, we have been exploring the possibilities of micro-CT in more than 10 specialties in pathology. Our studies have found that the benefits of using micro-CT are multifaceted, as it can be used (1) for margin detection by fresh tissue scanning-> frozen section diagnosis, (2) Whole block imaging to observe an entire block instead of several slides-> evaluate all materials from patient and (3) Multimodality imaging-> to improve diagnosis in each modality and use data for teaching purposes.

Our findings prove that micro-CT creates the possibility for a multimodality decision support system that can help us obtain a deeper understanding of cancer.

Advanced WSI Research

We continue to improve our automated FISH scoring project, expanding our project to Hodgkin lymphoma, which will begin in 2019. Additionally, our automated CISH scoring project will be applied to breast cancer cases, and has already shown a high possibility for clinical application in the near future.

Our project on histology 3D imaging for lung adenocarcinoma has been presented at international conferences and has impressed audience members whilst increasing interest in our research. Through histology 3D imaging and multiplex immuno fluorescence 3D imaging, we are demonstrating a previously unknown mechanism for cancer growth in a specific type of lung adenocarcinoma. This novel technology can be applied to any organ system’s cancer research.

Through our research projects listed above, we have received many requests from other departments for collaboration.
